Throughout the history of the Russian language and its predecessors, several drastic revisions have taken place in the written form of the language, in part due to a constant tension between the written and spoken languages.

Of all the languages of Russia, Russian is the only official language at the national level. There are 35 different languages which are considered official languages in various regions of Russia, along with Russian. There are over 100 ity languages spoken in Russia today.
