The public national discussion around same-sex marriage first began in 1993 when the Hawaii Supreme Court ruled that laws denying same-sex couples the right to marry violated state constitutional equal protection rights unless the state could show a "compelling reason" for such discrimination.
On June 26, 2015, the US Supreme Court ruled that gay marriage is a right protected by the US Constitution in all 50 states. Prior to their decision, same-sex marriage was already legal in 37 states and Washington DC, but was banned in the remaining 13.

On 26 June 2013 the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which excluded married gay couples from 1,138 federal protections and rights, was overturned and the Respect for Marriage Act (RFMA) was proposed. By 2014, 17 States, Washington D.C. and 8 Native American tribes had adopted full equality.
