Extremely high resolution images of our planet exist (i.e. ones that can resolve a dime (with sub-1mm ranging accuracy from~750,000 ft above the Earth’s surface)). The images were captured, stored, and processed (using classified hardware and software).
The 1.5 billion pixel picture is actually made of 411 images (taken over 3 years) that sweep over 100 millions stars and manage to focus on individual ones in the same way as one would focus on one grain of sand when taking a picture of a beach, NASA explains. Yes, that’s one powerful telescope.
Once you have the photo from the Internet, you can’t increase the number of pixels or information in the picture, but there are ways to sharpen it. You can also increase the density of the pictures and keep from degrading the resolution you have.
Unfortunately, with size comes space and it takes a lot of space to save a huge picture like this. This is especially true on your digital camera where space is probably quite limited if you want to take pictures at the size of the world’s highest resolution picture.
Post-processing and stitching the 46 terabytes afterwards took 2 months, and the resulting 365-gigapixel photo would be as large as a soccer field if printed out at 300dpi.
