AUGUSTA — State and federal entomologists have confirmed the presence of a destructive, invasive beetle in Maine for the first time.
FRYEBURG — Invasive plant and insects pose a threat to Maine’s environment, Saco River Recreational Council members told Fryeburg selectmen recently. According to Michelle Broyer, of the recreation council, invasive insects can destroy trees, and invasive plants, such as milfoil, can ruin water bodies including the Saco River.
Invasive beetle – the dreaded emerald ash borer – arrives in York County. State officials say the destructive bugs were found this week in Lebanon and Acton.
August has been declared Asian longhorned beetle month by the state of Massachusetts in order to raise awareness of the battle against this extremely destructive insect.

The first beetle has a solid brown patch, whereas the second beetle has a white line dividing the brown patch. The patterns of white and brown on the elytra (the wing converings on the top of the abdomen) are also not quite the same.
